Government Confirms Major A38 Improvements Across Somerset, Derbyshire

The UK government has confirmed major investment plans to improve the A38 road corridor, aiming to enhance connectivity, journey reliability, and safety across multiple regions. In North Somerset, a Department for Transport-backed scheme will upgrade nine locations along the A38 between Barrow Street and the Edithmead Roundabout, incorporating sustainable travel options such as widened walking and cycling paths, with detailed designs progressing toward a Full Business Case submission. Meanwhile, in Derby, a separate multi-million-pound project will upgrade key junctions by constructing flyovers and underpasses at the Little Eaton, Markeaton, and Kingsway roundabouts, potentially widening the road to six lanes to reduce travel times and support over 15,400 new homes and substantial business development. These road improvements are part of a broader £92 billion government infrastructure investment, which also includes enhancements to rail services such as the East Coast Main Line, reflecting a national strategy to bolster economic growth, job creation, and housing development.
