Two Sussex Beaches Designated Smoke-Free Zones

Bexhill Beach and Camber Sands in East Sussex have become the first beaches in England to implement voluntary smoke-free zones, marking a significant step in public health initiatives. The initiative, launched by East Sussex County Council and Rother District Council, aims to protect children and young people from the dangers of second-hand smoke, as well as to preserve the local environment from tobacco litter. This move coincides with No Smoking Day on March 12, 2025, and is supported by local health officials who emphasize the harmful effects of outdoor smoking. Councillor Doug Oliver hailed the decision as a positive step towards healthier public spaces. The initiative follows a trend seen in other countries and regions, including a similar beach designation in Wales back in 2016. Local authorities hope this pioneering effort will inspire further smoke-free policies across the UK.
