Jaremy, Vaughn Smith Sentenced in Separate Shootings

Jaremy Smith, a South Carolina man, was sentenced to life in prison for killing New Mexico State Police Officer Justin Hare after the officer stopped to help him with a flat tire; Smith shot Hare multiple times and stole his patrol car. Hare's family expressed anger that the death penalty was not pursued. Smith also faces charges in South Carolina for carjacking and killing a paramedic prior to the New Mexico incident. Separately, in Michigan, Vaughn Smith was sentenced to at least 25 years and up to nearly 30 years in prison for shooting his girlfriend during a domestic dispute over the paternity of one of their children. The Michigan altercation occurred in front of their children and ended when the girlfriend's teenage son intervened. Vaughn Smith expressed remorse, and despite his girlfriend's plea for leniency, the judge emphasized the need for accountability.
