Major Incident in St Leonards-on-Sea Over Chemicals
A major incident was declared in St Leonards-on-Sea, Sussex, after police discovered life-threatening explosive chemicals at a property on the A259 Marina. A 28-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of producing illegal substances and making an explosive substance, with police confirming the situation is not terror-related. Over 70 residents were evacuated, and a 100-meter cordon was established, affecting nearby properties and prompting the cancellation of the Hastings Half Marathon. Controlled burns of the substances were conducted by the Explosive Ordnance Disposal team, and operations to secure additional canisters continue. A rest center has been set up for displaced residents at the Royal Victoria Hotel, with the community and local agencies praised for their cooperation during the incident. The majority of residents have been allowed to return home, though some restrictions remain in place as further testing is conducted.
