Vodafone Conducts World's First Satellite Video Call from Remote Wales

Vodafone Group, in partnership with AST SpaceMobile, has achieved a milestone by conducting the world’s first video call using a standard smartphone and satellite from a remote area in Wales lacking mobile coverage. The call, made by engineer Rowan Chesmar to CEO Margherita Della Valle, utilized AST SpaceMobile's BlueBird satellites, enabling seamless connectivity for standard 4G and 5G smartphones without the need for specialized equipment. This technology represents a significant leap in mobile communications, allowing users to make video calls and access the internet in previously unreachable locations. Vodafone plans to roll out this satellite service commercially across Europe starting later this year, aiming to enhance connectivity in rural and underserved areas. British astronaut Tim Peake emphasized the importance of reliable communication in remote settings, while Vodafone's initiative is seen as a step toward closing the digital divide.
