Birdland in Bourton-on-the-Water, Gloucestershire, has celebrated the hatching of its first-ever southern cassowary chick, a significant milestone after 25 years of attempts. The chick, part of the European Endangered Species Programme, is the first southern cassowary born in the UK since 2021 and only the fourth in Europe this year. Alistair Keen, a keeper at the park, highlighted the efforts of the entire team and the protective nature of the male parent, who is responsible for incubation and care. Known as one of the world's most dangerous birds, the cassowary possesses formidable size and dagger-like claws, raising safety considerations for keepers. The southern cassowary can grow up to 6 feet tall and is recognized for its aggressive behavior, having been involved in fatal incidents in the past. The successful hatching marks a hopeful moment for the conservation of this endangered species.
