Nine Fugitives Captured After New Orleans Jailbreak One Remains At Large

Antoine Massey, one of ten inmates who escaped from the Orleans Parish Justice Center in New Orleans on May 16, 2025, has been recaptured after more than six weeks on the run. Massey was peacefully arrested at a residence in the Hollygrove area of New Orleans, approximately two miles from the jail, with law enforcement agencies including local police, Louisiana State Police, FBI, Department of Homeland Security, and U.S. Marshals Service involved in the coordinated operation. The May 16 escape, described by Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry as the worst in recent state history, involved inmates exploiting faulty infrastructure by removing a toilet from a cell wall and crawling through the resulting hole to escape. Authorities believe Massey had assistance during his time as a fugitive, and a woman linked to him was arrested for obstruction of justice and complicity in the escape. With Massey's capture, nine of the ten escapees are back in custody, leaving Derrick Groves, convicted of murder and other violent crimes, as the only one still at large. Investigations revealed possible inside help for the breakout, resulting in suspensions of jail staff, and additional charges are expected for Massey related to the escape.
