Monique Ryan, Labor, Greens Retain Key Seats
Independent MP Monique Ryan has narrowly retained the seat of Kooyong in Melbourne, defeating Liberal candidate Amelia Hamer by about 700 votes, with remaining ballots expected to split evenly. In Bradfield, Liberal candidate Gisele Kapterian is set to win over independent Nicolette Boele by a small margin. Labor's David Smith is projected to narrowly retain Bean in the ACT, which keeps Labor’s total at 93 seats in the House of Representatives. The Greens will hold onto the Brisbane seat of Ryan, despite a decrease in their primary vote. Four seats remain too close to call due to complex preference counts, delaying final results. Meanwhile, former industry and science minister Ed Husic has cited his public stance on Gaza as a factor in his cabinet removal, underlining tensions within the Labor Party over the issue.
