Maharashtra Halts Certificates Amid Immigration Fraud Probe

The Maharashtra government has paused the issuance of delayed birth and death certificates amid concerns of illegal Bangladeshi and Rohingya immigrants obtaining these documents fraudulently. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been established to investigate these allegations, which stem from reports of a large number of delayed applications being processed, particularly in districts like Malegaon and Amravati. Former BJP MP Kirit Somaiya has raised concerns about this issue, leading to the suspension of a tehsildar in Malegaon and further scrutiny by the state government. The SIT's investigation will cover previously issued certificates and pending applications, aiming to restore transparency and accountability in the process. The SIT will provide a report within six months, and no delayed certificates will be issued until then.
