IDF Top Lawyer Barred from Bar Association Conference
Defense Minister Israel Katz has barred the IDF's chief legal officer, Maj. Gen. Yifat Tomer-Yerushalmi, from attending the Israel Bar Association's annual conference, citing concerns about political content and the need for the military to avoid public controversy during the Gaza conflict. Katz insisted that Tomer-Yerushalmi focus on operational duties, such as ongoing investigations and supporting commanders in addressing allegations related to the war. The decision was made despite prior consent from IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir, who stressed the importance of publicly defending the IDF's adherence to international law. This move has heightened tensions between civilian and military leadership regarding the public role of the IDF's top lawyer. Other legal officials, including the Supreme Court Chief Justice and Attorney General, are still expected to participate in the conference. The incident has fueled debate in Israel over transparency, accountability, and the military's involvement in political discourse during wartime.
