Eldoret Removes Embarrassing Athlete Statues
Authorities in Eldoret, Kenya, removed three athlete statues after they faced widespread ridicule for their poor quality and lack of resemblance to the athletes they were meant to represent. The statues, which included one thought to depict marathon legend Eliud Kipchoge and another of 1,500m world-record holder Faith Kipyegon, were criticized online as 'shoddy,' 'lousy,' and 'embarrassing.' The sculptures were originally intended to celebrate the town's new city status and its rich sports and agricultural heritage but instead became a source of national embarrassment. Following the uproar, the statues were quietly taken down at night and relocated to an undisclosed location. The removal coincided with President William Ruto's visit to Eldoret to confer city status and honor Kenyan Olympic medalists.
