GM, Hyundai to Co-Develop Five New Vehicles
General Motors and Hyundai have entered a strategic partnership to co-develop five new vehicles, targeting an expanded footprint in the Americas and aiming to counter competition from Chinese automakers. Four of the vehicles—a compact SUV, a car, a compact pickup, and a mid-size pickup—will be sold in Central and South America with internal combustion and hybrid options, while an all-electric commercial van is planned for North America, with model launches starting in 2028. The companies will share major vehicle components but will distinguish their respective models through unique interior and exterior designs. GM will lead development of the mid-size pickup, while Hyundai will focus on the compact models and the electric van. The collaboration includes joint procurement of raw materials, logistics, and low-carbon steel to enhance cost-efficiency. Analysts suggest the partnership could help both companies leverage each other's strengths but face challenges from established Chinese electric vehicle competitors.
