Xinjiang Bridge Collapse Kills 5, Prompts Probe
On August 6, 2025, at approximately 6:18 p.m., a suspension bridge at the Xiata Scenic Area in Xinjiang, China, collapsed after a main cable snapped, causing the bridge deck to tilt sharply and resulting in 29 people falling, some into a river and onto rocks. Five people died and 24 others were injured, with two sustaining serious but non-life-threatening injuries. Video footage captured the aftermath, showing the bridge partially hanging over the river and rescue efforts by survivors and bystanders. Emergency responders quickly transported all injured to local hospitals. The scenic area was immediately closed, and authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the failure. The central government has dispatched a task force to oversee the investigation and improve safety measures at tourist sites across the country.
