Judge to Rule on Gutierrez-Reed's Conviction

A judge is set to decide whether to dismiss the conviction of Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, the armorer involved in the fatal 2021 shooting on the set of 'Rust,' which resulted in the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. Gutierrez-Reed, convicted of involuntary manslaughter and currently serving an 18-month sentence, has requested a retrial or dismissal based on alleged prosecutorial misconduct, including the withholding of exculpatory evidence. This follows the dismissal of similar charges against actor Alec Baldwin due to evidence mishandling by prosecutors. Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer is reconsidering the case after previously dismissing Baldwin's charges for similar reasons. Prosecutors argue against Gutierrez-Reed's immediate release, claiming the evidence in question is irrelevant, while her defense maintains she was scapegoated for broader safety failures on the set. The judge's ruling is expected next week.
