Atlético Madrid Completes Baena, Ruggeri Signings for €62 Million
Atlético Madrid have completed two significant signings ahead of the 2025–26 season, acquiring Matteo Ruggeri from Atalanta for around €20 million and Álex Baena from Villarreal for a record €42 million fee, potentially rising to €55 million with bonuses. Ruggeri, a 22-year-old Italian, signed a five-year contract and is expected to strengthen Atlético's left-side defense, bringing both solid defensive skills and attacking contributions, having created 25 chances and made 25 successful crosses last season in Serie A. Baena, also on a five-year deal, is a versatile midfielder known for his creativity and playmaking, with 32 goal contributions in 66 LaLiga appearances since the start of the 2023/24 season; he has won UEFA Euro 2024 and an Olympic gold medal with Spain. Atlético's coach Diego Simeone faces an interesting challenge in integrating Baena’s versatility, potentially deploying him in various midfield or attacking roles. These acquisitions are part of a broader squad rejuvenation as Atlético have seen departures of key players like Cesar Azpilicueta, Axel Witsel, and Reinildo Mandava. The club also reportedly is negotiating for Real Betis’ Johnny Cardoso, signaling a continued strategy to refresh and strengthen the team.
