BHP, CATL, BYD Partner on Global Decarbonization

BHP Group has signed memorandums of understanding with Chinese battery leaders CATL and FinDreams Battery, a BYD subsidiary, to accelerate the decarbonization of its global mining operations. The partnerships focus on deploying battery-powered solutions for heavy mining equipment and locomotives, developing rapid charging infrastructure, and advancing battery recycling technologies, leveraging BHP’s copper operations for circular economy initiatives. Both CATL and FinDreams Battery will contribute expertise in energy storage, battery modules, and commercial electric vehicles to help reduce BHP's diesel use and greenhouse gas emissions. These efforts support BHP’s commitment to achieving net-zero operational emissions by 2050, with an interim target of a 30% reduction by 2030. BHP executives have described the agreements as pivotal milestones for decarbonizing the global resources industry. The partnerships reflect broader Australia-China business cooperation and may foster further collaboration in the green energy transition.
