Greece Deploys Salvage Tug Giant to Protect Red Sea Shipping Amid Houthi Attacks
In response to recent attacks by Yemen’s Houthi rebels on Greek-operated vessels in the Red Sea, Greece is deploying a powerful salvage tug named Giant to enhance maritime safety and protect Greek-owned ships and seafarers. The Giant, equipped with four engines producing 16,000 horsepower and manned by 14 experienced Greek sailors, is capable of operating in severe weather and is outfitted for rescue, firefighting, towing, anti-pollution operations, and onboard emergency care. The vessel can accommodate up to 40 people, facilitate medical treatment, and support helicopter operations, making it a critical asset for search and rescue missions and marine pollution prevention. Attacks on the cargo ships Magic Seas and Eternity C, including loss of life and crew captivity, underscored the urgent need for such a deployment, especially given the absence of other rescue vessels in the region at the time. Shipping Minister Vassilis Kikilias emphasized that the mission demonstrates Greece's commitment to maritime safety, crew protection, and ensuring secure shipping routes amid ongoing regional tensions. The Giant is expected to fill a vital gap in security and emergency response in the Red Sea, where Iranian-aligned Houthi militants have escalated their attacks in solidarity with the Palestinians in Gaza.
