EF2 Tornado Hits Phelps, New York, Causes Major Structural Damage
A powerful EF-2 tornado with wind speeds up to 115 mph struck the town of Phelps in Ontario County, New York, on Monday evening, traveling 1.7 miles and causing significant structural damage including roofs torn off historic homes and a barn displaced from its foundation. No injuries were reported despite the extensive destruction, which also included snapped and uprooted hardwood trees and downed utility poles. The National Weather Service confirmed the tornado after surveying the damage and collecting reports and footage from the area. Residents described the event as shocking and frightening, with one witnessing the tornado narrowly miss a barn full of cattle. Local authorities closed several roads due to debris and storm damage, and crews are working to restore power. This tornado is the fifth and strongest confirmed in New York this year, following a deadly EF-1 tornado earlier in June.
