West Nile Virus Deaths Reach 18 in U.S.

The West Nile virus has led to multiple deaths and infections across the U.S. this year, with a total of 18 deaths reported by the CDC so far. In New Jersey, two older adults from Cumberland and Mercer counties succumbed to the virus, adding to the eight cases recorded in the state. Wisconsin has also reported two deaths, and Illinois confirmed its first fatal case this year. Overall, the CDC has documented 289 cases of West Nile in 33 states in 2024, with 195 being neuroinvasive. Health officials emphasize mosquito bite prevention as the primary method to avoid infection, recommending the use of insect repellent and reducing exposure during peak mosquito activity times.
