IHSAA Approves Girls Flag Football as Emerging Sport in Indiana

The Indiana High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) has approved girls flag football as an emerging sport, marking the first step toward it becoming a fully sanctioned high school sport in the state. The Indianapolis Colts have been instrumental in this movement, launching the 'Road to 100' initiative with a $1 million investment to support the creation of 100 girls teams by 2025 and offering up to $10,000 in funding per participating school. The Colts Girls High School Flag Football League expanded from eight to 27 teams in just one year, and 65 schools have already committed to fielding teams next year. This initiative is part of a broader effort to expand opportunities for girls and women in athletics, with the sport's growth paralleling its anticipated debut in the 2028 Olympics. The IHSAA's decision was overwhelmingly supported and reflects a recognition of evolving needs in secondary education and athletics. Additionally, the IHSAA approved new transfer rules for student athletes, allowing one transfer within the first six semesters without loss of eligibility, further supporting flexibility for students.
