Federal Court Blocks Medicaid Funding for Most Planned Parenthood Clinics Across Multiple States
A recent federal court ruling has significantly cut off Medicaid funding to most Planned Parenthood clinics across several states, including California, West Virginia, and Colorado, following a new law signed by President Trump that restricts Medicaid reimbursements to abortion providers. U.S. District Judge Indira Talwani issued a preliminary injunction that allows only clinics that do not provide abortions or receive less than $800,000 in Medicaid funds to continue receiving payments, excluding most Planned Parenthood affiliates. The law, known as the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” has been challenged by Planned Parenthood on constitutional grounds, particularly citing violations of free speech and equal protection rights. The funding cuts threaten to disrupt access to essential reproductive health services such as birth control, cancer screenings, and STI testing, disproportionately impacting Medicaid patients. While the court acknowledged Congress's authority to restrict abortion funding, it found that penalizing non-abortion providing affiliates due to their association with abortion providers likely violates the First Amendment. Despite a partial legal reprieve for some affiliates, Planned Parenthood leaders warn that many patients are already being denied care, and the organization is committed to maintaining services amid ongoing legal battles.
