Eni and Snam have launched Italy's first carbon capture and storage (CCS) project, Ravenna CCS, aimed at significantly reducing CO₂ emissions from industrial activities. Phase 1 of the initiative will capture approximately 25,000 tonnes of CO₂ annually from Eni's natural gas treatment plant in Casalborsetti, with the captured gas transported to an offshore platform and stored at a depth of 3,000 meters in a depleted gas field. The project has achieved over 90% carbon capture efficiency, peaking at 96%, and is powered entirely by renewable energy, thus avoiding additional CO₂ emissions during operations. Future plans include expanding the project to store up to 4 million tonnes of CO₂ annually by 2030. CEO Claudio Descalzi emphasized the project's significance for decarbonizing energy-intensive industries, highlighting its competitive service and growing customer interest. Critics, however, voice concerns regarding the economic viability of CCS technology and its potential to prolong fossil fuel dependence.
