Former New York Jets Seven-Time Pro Bowler Nick Mangold Dies at 41 from Kidney Disease Complications

Former New York Jets center Nick Mangold died Saturday night at 41 from complications of a chronic kidney disease, the team announced; his death came less than two weeks after he publicly sought a kidney transplant and disclosed he had been on dialysis for a condition diagnosed in 2006. Mangold was a first‑round pick out of Ohio State in 2006 who spent his entire 11‑season NFL career with the Jets, earning seven Pro Bowl nods and multiple All‑Pro honors, helping lead New York to multiple deep playoff runs and earning induction into the Jets’ Ring of Honor in 2022. He had recently advanced as one of 52 modern‑era candidates toward consideration for the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Jets chairman Woody Johnson praised Mangold as “the heartbeat” of the offensive line and a beloved teammate whose leadership defined an era of Jets football.
