Danville Councilman Set on Fire in Personal Attack

Danville, Virginia City Councilman Lee Vogler was seriously injured on July 30, 2025, after being doused with gasoline and set on fire at his workplace, Showcase Magazine. The attacker, Shotsie Michael Buck Hayes, 29, forced his way into Vogler's office, chased him outside, and ignited him, resulting in third-degree burns over more than 60% of Vogler's body. Vogler is currently hospitalized in critical condition. Police apprehended Hayes shortly after the attack and charged him with attempted first-degree murder and aggravated malicious wounding. Authorities confirmed that Vogler and Hayes knew each other and that the attack was motivated by a personal dispute, not Vogler's political role.
