The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) plans to extend trading hours on its NYSE Arca exchange to 22 hours a day, from 1:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. ET on weekdays, pending regulatory approval. This initiative aims to accommodate the growing demand for trading U.S.-listed stocks, exchange-traded funds (ETFs), and closed-end funds, enhancing global access to U.S. capital markets. Kevin Tyrrell, head of markets at NYSE, emphasized that this move reflects the strength of U.S. markets and aims to serve investors across different time zones. Currently, trading hours are limited to 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. ET, with extended hours from 4:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. The NYSE will file updated rules with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and will continue to clear trades through the Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation. This change comes in response to the rise of 24/7 trading in cryptocurrency markets and the recent introduction of 24/5 trading by online brokerage Robinhood.
