Asteroid 2024 YR4's Impact Risk Increases, UN Protocol Activated
The asteroid 2024 YR4, discovered on December 27, 2024, is currently under close scrutiny due to an increasing probability of impacting Earth, now estimated at 1.9% according to NASA and the European Space Agency (ESA). This asteroid, measuring approximately 40 to 90 meters, could potentially hit Earth in 2032 and is classified as a Level 3 object on the Torino Impact Hazard Scale. Experts have raised alarms, with astronomer Dr. David Whitehouse stating that the chances of impact have risen to one in 67, which he considers unacceptable to ignore. In response to this growing concern, the United Nations planetary security protocol has been activated for the first time, allowing for coordinated monitoring and response strategies. Proposals are being discussed, including the extreme measure of sending a nuclear weapon to deflect the asteroid if necessary. Despite these risks, there remains over a 98% chance that 2024 YR4 will pass without incident, prompting ongoing observation efforts until it becomes undetectable after April 2025.
