Bhutan Plans Gelephu Mindfulness City Development

Bhutan has announced an ambitious plan to develop the 'Gelephu Mindfulness City' (GMC), aiming to foster economic growth and promote sustainability through this unique urban initiative. Located in a special administrative region with distinct laws, GMC will serve as an economic corridor linking South Asia to Southeast Asia and promote eco-friendly practices like walking, cycling, and green spaces. The project, aligning with Bhutan's Gross National Happiness philosophy, intends to create jobs and attract investments in diverse sectors such as finance, healthcare, technology, and eco-tourism. A 10-year 'Nation Building Bond' is set to raise $100 million from non-resident Bhutanese to fund foundational infrastructure, including an international airport. This initiative also seeks to boost Bhutan's $3 billion economy, which has been heavily impacted by COVID-19 restrictions, by providing a platform for sustainable economic resilience. The development is seen as a call to actively shape a mindful and resilient Bhutan, enhancing well-being and economic stability.
