Paris Man Sentenced Suspended Term for Lighting Cigarette at War Memorial Flame
Hakim H., a 47-year-old Moroccan construction worker living in Normandy and working in Paris, was sentenced by a Paris criminal court to a three-month suspended jail term for desecrating the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier by lighting a cigarette from its eternal flame. The incident, which occurred on a Monday evening and was widely shared on social media, sparked public outrage as the eternal flame is a sacred symbol commemorating France’s fallen soldiers from World War I. Hakim expressed deep remorse in court, apologizing to the French people and describing his act as "the stupidity of the century," explaining he was under the influence of alcohol and medication at the time. Besides the suspended sentence, he was fined a symbolic one euro, ordered to undergo treatment for his addictions, and faces an 18-month probation period; the French government also plans to revoke his residence permit. Officials, including French Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau and Veterans Minister Patricia Miralles, condemned the act as a grave insult and desecration to the memory of those who died for France. The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, located beneath the Arc de Triomphe since 1920, holds deep symbolic significance as a principal tribute to fallen soldiers.
