Josh Naylor Did Not Travel; May Miss Game 3
Mariners first baseman Josh Naylor did not travel with the team to Detroit and could miss Game 3 of the ALDS as his wife is due to give birth, manager Dan Wilson said, adding the club will know more tomorrow and has a plan to play without him. Naylor started Game 1 despite recent groin soreness that kept him out of the final regular-season games and has been a key addition since the July trade (.299 with nine homers and 33 RBIs). He is 0-for-8 so far in the ALDS. Seattle has prepared contingencies: All-Star Eugenio Suárez has taken ground-ball work at first, rookie Ben Williamson has gotten reps at third, and Luke Raley is also a candidate to cover first. Teammates and coaches praised Naylor’s calm, “headsy” approach, leadership and unexpected baserunning value, making his availability a significant storyline for the series.
