Typhoon Kong-rey, known as Typhoon Leon in the Philippines, struck Taiwan with devastating impact, marking it as the largest storm to hit the island in nearly three decades. The typhoon brought winds up to 141 mph and heavy rains, resulting in the evacuation of over 8,600 people, with one confirmed death and numerous injuries. Taiwan's capital, Taipei, experienced significant disruptions, with schools and offices closed and transportation services suspended. The storm also affected the Philippines, causing damage in Batanes and prompting emergency measures. Despite its weakening as it moved northwest, Kong-rey continued to pose risks of severe weather conditions as it headed towards mainland China.
