Federal Government Allocates Over $1.2 Billion For North Carolina, Georgia Hurricane Helene Recovery
The federal government is providing substantial funding to aid recovery from Hurricane Helene and Tropical Storm Debby in North Carolina and Georgia, focusing on infrastructure repair and debris removal. North Carolina is set to receive a historic $1.15 billion grant from the Federal Highway Administration, adding to earlier funds and aiming to cover about 80% of the nearly $5 billion in storm-related repair costs, with the state covering the remainder. President Trump emphasized the administration’s commitment to rebuilding and restoring communities affected by the storms. Meanwhile, Georgia has been allocated over $49 million by FEMA to support 111 projects including road repairs, electrical system restoration, and debris clearance, with some grants reaching up to $4.7 million for emergency protective measures and critical infrastructure work. FEMA’s Public Assistance Program reimburses these efforts at a minimum of 75% federal share, sometimes 100%, and Georgia has received over $798 million in total recovery funds to date. Despite these federal efforts, North Carolina lawmakers continue to push for an additional $13.5 billion to fully address the estimated $60 billion in damages caused by Helene.
