Glasgow is poised to be announced as the host city for a scaled-down version of the 2026 Commonwealth Games, following Victoria's withdrawal due to soaring costs. The Australian state agreed to pay AUD 380 million (USD 256 million) in compensation to the Commonwealth Games Federation after pulling out in July 2023. Glasgow's proposal will utilize venues from the successful 2014 Games, reducing the number of sports from 20 to between 10 and 13, with costs estimated between £130 million and £150 million (around USD 170 million). The Scottish and UK governments have opted not to use public funds for the event, which will be supported by a £100 million (USD 130 million) contribution from the CGF and additional investment from Australia. UK Health Secretary Neil Gray acknowledged the challenges of meeting the high expectations set by the previous Games but expressed hope for a successful, innovative event. The 2026 Commonwealth Games are being positioned as a model for future iterations, emphasizing sustainability and cost-effectiveness.
