UK PM Condemns Violence After 150,000 Far-Right Protest, 26 Police Injured
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned the violence and racial intimidation that occurred during what is considered one of the largest far-right rallies in recent UK history, organized by far-right figure Tommy Robinson and attended by up to 150,000 people. The 'Unite the Kingdom' protest, which centered on migration and national identity, involved clashes between protesters and police, resulting in 25 arrests and 26 officers injured, including four seriously, as some demonstrators used violence and carried anti-immigration slogans. Starmer emphasized that while peaceful protest is a core value, Britain will not tolerate assaults on police or intimidation based on race or background, reaffirming the nation's commitment to tolerance and diversity. The rally featured speeches by far-right European politicians and controversial figures, including Elon Musk who called for radical political change and warned of conflict, while some speakers expressed Islamophobic and anti-immigrant sentiments. Police faced challenges dealing with the unexpectedly large and violent crowd, and counter-protests by anti-racism groups were held nearby, requiring deployment of around 1,000 officers to maintain order. Starmer faces growing pressure to address the surge in far-right support and ensure stronger action against extremist violence.
