Kipchoge, who experienced back pain during the race, handed his shoes and socks to fans before departing, receiving an emotional send-off. Ethiopian runner Tamirat Tola won the marathon in an Olympic record time of 2:06:26, while Kipchoge's disappointing performance ended his remarkable streak of success in the sport.
