El Idrissi Breaks Women's Marathon World Record

Fatima Ezzahra El Idrissi of Morocco set a new world record in the women's marathon for visually impaired runners at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, finishing in 2 hours, 48 minutes, and 36 seconds, surpassing the previous record by nearly six minutes. El Idrissi's performance earned her both the gold medal and the world record. Elena Congost was disqualified for releasing her guide prematurely, resulting in Japan's Misato Michishita being upgraded to bronze. Swiss wheelchair racers Catherine Debrunner and Marcel Hug won the T53/54 categories, with Debrunner finishing in 1:41:50 and Hug in 1:27:39. Nigeria's Folashade Oluwafemiayo broke her own world record in women's para powerlifting by bench-pressing 167 kilograms. The closing ceremony featured a dance party at Stade de France, with additional medals awarded in various events including wheelchair basketball and para canoe.
