Car Plows Into Maryland Birthday Tent; One Dead

Around 10:15 p.m. Saturday in Bladensburg, Maryland, a car plowed into a tent at an outdoor child’s birthday party, killing 31-year-old Ashley Hernandez Gutierrez and injuring about 13–14 people, including roughly eight children aged about 1 to 17. Emergency crews treated victims at the scene and transported multiple people to area hospitals; six children were treated and released while several others, including one child and several adults, remained hospitalized in stable condition. Police say the driver, a 66-year-old Washington, D.C., man who initially fled on foot, later turned himself in and has been interviewed as prosecutors review potential criminal charges. Investigators are reconstructing the crash, say the vehicle came from the area of Annapolis Road and crashed through a white marquee on the front lawn, and are consulting with the state’s attorney while urging anyone with information to contact Bladensburg police.
