Shortage of Poinsettias Affects Holiday Sales

Poinsettias and mistletoe are popular holiday plants, each with rich histories and unique care needs. The poinsettia, native to Mexico, was introduced to the U.S. in 1828 by Joel Poinsett and has become a staple of Christmas decor, known for its vibrant colors and association with festive traditions. However, this year, a shortage has led to higher prices in the UK due to increased pest inspections and the failure of new peat-free compost, resulting in the loss of significant quantities of the plants. Meanwhile, a Mississippi State University project showcases over 60 varieties of poinsettias, encouraging people to explore new colors and types to enhance their holiday displays. Additionally, National Poinsettia Day is celebrated on December 12, honoring the plant's significance during the festive season. Other festive plants, such as Christmas cacti and orchids, are also highlighted as alternatives for holiday decor.
