Comoros President Assoumani Injured in Knife Attack

Comoros President Azali Assoumani was slightly injured in a knife attack during a funeral for a religious leader in Moroni. The attacker, identified as 24-year-old soldier Ahmed Abdou, was restrained and later found dead in his prison cell under unclear circumstances. Authorities have launched investigations into both the motive behind the attack and the cause of Abdou's death. Assoumani, who came to power in a 1999 coup and was re-elected in a disputed 2021 election, required stitches but is in good health. A civilian was also injured while protecting the president. The incident has raised concerns about security and political stability in the archipelago nation, which has experienced numerous coups since its independence from France in 1975.
