This variant is a hybrid of the Omicron subvariants KS.1.1 and KP.3.3 and has been reported in 27 countries, including the US and several European nations. Experts suggest that while XEC may present a slight transmission advantage, current vaccines should still provide protection against severe illness. The symptoms associated with XEC are similar to previous COVID-19 strains, including fever, sore throat, and fatigue. The UK has already reported a 4.3% increase in Covid cases week-on-week, prompting renewed attention to booster vaccination campaigns set for autumn.
