Harini Amarasuriya Reappointed Prime Minister of Sri Lanka

Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has reappointed Harini Amarasuriya as Prime Minister following a successful general election where his leftist coalition secured 159 out of 225 parliamentary seats. Alongside Amarasuriya, veteran politician Vijitha Herath has been tasked with the foreign affairs ministry, while Dissanayake retains the crucial finance portfolio himself. Amarasuriya, the first prime minister from the National People's Power (NPP) party and the third woman to hold the position, is committed to educational reform and social justice. Following a severe economic crisis, the new government aims to stabilize the country while intending to negotiate terms with the International Monetary Fund. Dissanayake's administration faces the challenge of implementing policies to address poverty and graft amidst ongoing economic recovery efforts. The newly sworn-in cabinet consists of 21 ministers, including several academicians, reflecting a blend of academic and political expertise.
