Archewell Foundation Cuts Ties with Milwaukee Muslim Group Over Hate Speech

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s Archewell Foundation has ended its funding for the Milwaukee Muslim Women’s Coalition, citing a zero-tolerance policy on hate speech. The decision followed public attention to an op-ed by the coalition's executive director, Janan Najeeb, which included the phrase 'from the river to the sea,' a slogan considered antisemitic by some organizations, as well as her involvement in an event featuring a mural that merged the Star of David with a swastika. Archewell stated that while it welcomes diverse perspectives, it cannot support language or imagery perceived as hate speech. The coalition had received grants supporting Afghan refugee women, and Najeeb expressed deep disappointment, arguing that her statements were mischaracterized and that the funding withdrawal harms vulnerable women. The controversy has sparked debate about the boundaries between political expression and hate speech, as well as the responsibilities of philanthropic organizations when partnering with community groups. Archewell has confirmed it will make no further grants to the coalition and has removed the group from its network.
