NHL Veteran Tyson Barrie Retires After 14 Seasons, 822 Games
Tyson Barrie, a Canadian defenseman known for his offensive skills and power-play prowess, announced his retirement from the NHL after 14 seasons and 822 games. Drafted by the Colorado Avalanche in 2009, Barrie played for five NHL teams, including the Avalanche, Toronto Maple Leafs, Edmonton Oilers, Nashville Predators, and Calgary Flames, finishing his career splitting time between the Flames and their AHL affiliate in the 2024-25 season. He scored 110 goals and 508 points in his NHL career, highlighted by leading all NHL defensemen in scoring during the 2020-21 season with the Oilers. Barrie was also a key contributor to Team Canada's international success, winning gold at the 2015 IIHF World Championship and silver medals in 2011 and 2017. While his defensive play had limitations, his offensive consistency and smooth skating made him a valuable player and respected teammate. Despite not receiving major individual NHL awards, Barrie's career earnings totaled nearly $48 million, and he appeared in the playoffs seven times.
