New Details in Newport Beach Police Shooting
Geoffrey Shyam Stirling, a 45-year-old motorcyclist from Laguna Niguel, was fatally shot by Newport Beach police during a traffic stop on Pacific Coast Highway near Superior Avenue around 9:15 p.m. on April 17. Police allege Stirling became uncooperative, assaulted an officer, seized the officer's Taser, and attempted to use it on the officer multiple times before being shot. Stirling was transported to Hoag Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Authorities state that Stirling was unarmed at the time and was facing a felony arson charge with a court appearance scheduled the following Monday. The California Department of Justice and Newport Beach police are conducting an independent investigation into the shooting, as mandated by state law for officer-involved shootings resulting in the death of an unarmed civilian. No officers were injured, and police are asking anyone with information to contact them.
