Alleged Russian Spy Claims Misleading Interpol Connection in Court

Vanya Gaberova, a 30-year-old beautician, testified at the Old Bailey that she believed she was assisting Interpol while working with alleged Russian spy Biser Dzhambazov, who misled her into thinking he was an officer. Gaberova explained that their relationship began during the 2021 Bulgarian elections, where Dzhambazov, 43, charmed her and convinced her to join him on surveillance missions across Europe, claiming it was for Interpol. Despite questions from her family about his legitimacy, Gaberova stated she never doubted his identity, even showing her fake credentials on a video call. Dzhambazov has admitted to spying for Russia, along with co-defendant Orlin Roussev, while Gaberova and others deny any knowledge of the espionage activities. The court heard that their operations included surveillance of investigative journalist Christo Grozev, who has reported on Russian involvement in various incidents. Gaberova described Dzhambazov as charismatic and captivating, indicating that her feelings for him grew amidst the deception.
