Mickey Mouse officially entered the public domain on 1 January 2024, the copyright held by Disney on the 1928 version of the character having expired. Disney still retains the copyright to the modern version of Mickey Mouse, despite the older character now being freely available for use. Adaptations of the older character have already begun to surface, including a horror movie based on Steamboat Willie and a video game titled 'Infestation 88', both featuring darker versions of the beloved character.
