Backyard Kids Recalls Nearly 200,000 Toy Kitchens After Toddler Strangulation Death

Backyard Kids, LLC has recalled approximately 192,000 KidKraft Farm to Table Model Play Kitchens due to strangulation hazards linked to utility hooks designed to hold toy kitchen accessories. This recall follows the tragic death of a 23-month-old toddler in Oregon in 2023, who asphyxiated after his shirt became caught on one of the hooks while climbing and crawling through the play kitchen. The recalled play kitchens, originally manufactured by KidKraft, Inc., were sold online through retailers such as Amazon, Walmart, and KidKraft's website from 2018 through July 2025, with prices ranging from $120 to $270. Backyard Kids is offering free replacement hooks and advises consumers to immediately stop using the play kitchens and remove the original hooks. The model number for the affected kitchens is 53411, and they are characterized by black and light gray coloring with wood-like countertops. Despite filing for bankruptcy last year, Backyard Kids is cooperating with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission to address the safety concerns and prevent further incidents.
