UEFA Champions League Expands to 36 Teams

The 2024-25 UEFA Champions League introduces a new format, expanding from 32 to 36 teams and replacing the group stage with a league system. Each team will play eight matches against different opponents, with the top eight teams qualifying directly for the last-16 knockout stage. Teams placed 9th to 24th will compete in two-legged play-offs to secure the remaining knockout spots, while teams finishing 25th and below will be eliminated. This new structure aims to create a more unpredictable and engaging competition, increasing the total prize money to €2.437 billion. Additionally, the expanded format raises concerns about player burnout due to the increased number of matches, with games now scheduled on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. The Champions League final is scheduled to be held on May 31, 2025, in Munich.
