A new report from the Energy Crisis Commission warns that the UK is critically unprepared for future energy crises, primarily due to its heavy reliance on gas for heating and electricity. The UK ranks second in Europe for gas heating and fifth for gas-generated electricity, which has left households and businesses disproportionately affected during the recent energy crisis. Approximately 7.5 million households are now in fuel poverty, with total energy debts reaching £3.5 billion. The Commission criticizes the slow progress in improving energy efficiency and expanding renewable energy sources, urging urgent government action to reduce gas dependence and enhance home energy efficiency. Despite significant government financial support, many vulnerable households continue to struggle, indicating that current policies are inadequately targeted. The report calls for a strategic shift towards low-carbon alternatives to mitigate the risks of future energy price shocks.
