EU agrees new sanctions targeting Russia's shadow fleet, marks Ukraine invasion anniversary

The European Union has agreed to implement its 16th package of sanctions against Russia, coinciding with the third anniversary of the country's invasion of Ukraine. This new sanctions package includes a ban on the import of Russian aluminum and the export of gaming consoles, as well as targeting 73 additional vessels in Russia's shadow fleet. Ursula von der Leyen, President of the EU Commission, emphasized the EU's commitment to intensifying pressure on the Kremlin, highlighting measures against individuals and entities involved in circumventing sanctions. Further disconnection of additional Russian banks from the SWIFT system and restrictions on Belarus are also part of the measures. The EU's actions come amid US-led discussions with Russia to potentially resolve the conflict, raising concerns among European officials about being sidelined in negotiations. The sanctions are expected to be formally approved by EU foreign ministers next week.
