Wisconsin Orders Flags Half-Staff for Former Oneida Nation Chairman Danforth
Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers has ordered that flags be flown at half-staff on June 7, 2025, in honor of Gerald L. “Jerry” Danforth, former chairman of the Oneida Nation, who passed away on June 1 at the age of 78. Danforth served two non-consecutive terms as chairman, focusing on strengthening Indian gaming, economic development, healthcare, higher education, and preserving the Oneida language, while also fostering communication between the state and Native Nations. Prior to his leadership role, he dedicated over 30 years to the U.S. Navy, retiring as Force Master Chief of the Naval Surface Force, U.S. Atlantic Fleet, with active service in Vietnam and Operation Desert Storm. He also served as a judicial officer for the Oneida Appeals Commission. Gov. Evers praised Danforth's integrity, dedication, and commitment to Tribal sovereignty and culture, expressing condolences to his family and the Oneida Nation. Funeral services and burial with military honors are scheduled for June 7 in Oneida.
